“Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum” Medical Suspensions

Posted in Cage Coverage, Local MMA News, MMA News Worldwide on June 28th, 2010 by CageCoverage

“Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Werdum” took place this past Saturday and aired live on Showtime, left five fighters with medical suspensions in its wake.

PhotoFabricio Werdum’s 69-second submission of Fedor Emelianenko did not produce any medical suspensions. Werdum’s manager today told MMAjunkie.com that the healthy fighter plans to watch the 2010 World Cup and may head to New York City for a short press tour this week.

Co-main event fighter Jan Finney (Pictured above) received the most serious suspension following her devastating TKO loss to Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos. She suffered an orbital fracture and is suspended for 180 days or until she is cleared by a doctor. Additionally, she is suspended for 60 days for lacerations to the right and left side of her face, as well as for 45 days for the TKO loss with no contact for 30 days for precautionary reasons.

Veteran Scott Smith, who took a nasty liver kick that ended his rematch with former middleweight champion Cung Le, is suspended for 60 days for facial lacerations he received during the bout and will need to be cleared by a physician before he returns. Additionally, he is benched 45 days and restricted from contact for 30 days for precautionary reasons.

The rib injury that former lightweight champion Josh Thomson told MMAjunkie.com about following his tough win over Pat Healy was confirmed by the CSAC, and he is suspended for 180 days or until he is cleared by a physician to compete.

Frank Shamrock, Champion and Legend of MMA Worldwide, Retires

Posted in Cage Coverage, Local MMA News, MMA News Worldwide, UFC News on June 28th, 2010 by CageCoverage

Rather than beat a dead horse with another version of this story, Here is a sample piece from Kid Nate at BloodyElbow.com

Since Frank Shamrock officially retired from fighting on Saturday, I thought I’d go ahead an revive my long slumbering MMA History series with a special all Frank Shamrock installment. It’s oddly fitting that Frank’s retirement was utterly overshadowed by the defeat of Fedor Emelianenko’s first ever defeat on the same night because Frank’s career, storied as it has been has been constantly in the shadows.

Its easy for newer fans to sleep on just how great Frank Shamrock was at his peak. There are several reasons for this:

  1. He fought at the beginning of the dark ages of the UFC. They were still on PPV but just barely. So many fewer people saw Frank’s glory days than saw the Royce Gracie/Ken Shamrock era or even the Don Frye/Mark Coleman period.
  2. His biggest fights have never been released on DVD in the states (track down the Australian versions on EBay).
  3. He walked away from the sport at his physical peak (age 28) and barely fought for the next ten years. He almost signed with PRIDE but never stepped in the ring there.
  4. Many casual fans confuse him with his adopted brother Ken Shamrock.
  5. Most of his biggest wins were over fighters who either never lived up to their potential (Olympic gold medalist Kevin Jackson), retired after losing to Frank (Igor Zinoviev) or went on to suffer long declines that make them seem less impressive in retrospect (Enson Inoue, John Lober).

Dave Meltzer writes:

Shamrock started in the Pancrase organization in Japan in 1994. It was the first organization that popularized the sport in that country. Starting out in the shadow of adopted brother Ken Shamrock, the top fighter in the company, Frank briefly held the Pancrase championship and had legendary battles with the likes of Bas Rutten (video), Yuki Kondo, Masakatsu Funaki and Allan Goes.

While it is basically erased from the UFC version of the history of the sport, Shamrock’s run as champion from Dec. 21, 1997, through relinquishing the title on Sept. 24, 1999, was one of the most impressive runs in company history.

He won the championship by beating 1992 Olympic wrestling gold medalist Kevin Jackson in 14 seconds with an armbar. He followed with a 22-second win against Igor Zinoviev, at the time the other major champion in the sport, with one of the most devastating slams in UFC history. His final UFC appearance, against Tito Ortiz, still is considered the greatest match of the UFC’s early days (video). Giving up 25 pounds in the cage, he survived three rounds of ground and pound with movement on the bottom that gassed out his far bigger and stronger opponent.

Finally, his feud with Zuffa has caused them to write him out of the official history of the UFC. Don’t hold your breath waiting for Frank to be inducted in the UFC Hall of Fame although no fighter deserves it more.

It’s impossible to convey how thrilling it was to follow Frank Shamrock in his glory days. Not only did he put together one of the most impressive championship runs in UFC history, he did it by

dramatically beating a string of opponents in different ways. There were

thrilling upsets (Kevin Jackson, Tito Ortiz), revenge matches (John Lober), come from behind pull it out of nowhere submissions (Jeremy Horn), blink and you’ll miss it quick matches (Jackson, Igor Zinoviev) and an epic beatdown (John Lober).

Thanks for the memories Frank! Maybe someday, the UFC will realize that honoring your accomplishments adds to their glory as well.

STRIKEFORCE: Fedor v. Werdum is Biggest Upset in MMA History

Werdum def Fedor- Triangle Choke/ Arm Bar in Rd 1

Fedor Emelianenko’s 28-bout unbeaten streak is over. Fabricio Werdum forced Emelianenko to tap out with an armbar and triangle choke in the first round of their Strikeforce heavyweight bout tonight at HP Pavilion in San Jose.

Emelianenko caught Werdum with solid strikes in the opening moments of the bout sending Werdum to his back on the canvas. Emelianenko jumped into the noted BJJ fighter’s guard and started to rain down punches. Werdum quickly transitioned to a triangle choke but, Emelianenko shrugged it off. Returning to throw more punches, Werdum again tried a triangle choke with arm bar and this time, Emelianenko was caught. The world’s greatest MMA fighter and best pound-for-pound fighter was forced to tap just over one minuet in the first round.

That leaves the 33-year-old Russian with a record of 32-2 while Werdum improves to 14-4-1.

Emelianenko said the discomfort from the triangle choke more than the armbar forced him to tap out.

“I made a mistake,” said Fedor, who hadn’t lost since 2000. “I’ll try to figure out and analyze why it happened.”

Fedor was apologetic in his postfight interview: “I hit Fabricio and wanted to finish, and I made a mistake. Certainly, there were several moments when I could escape, but I relied on myself too much and I paid for it.

“I’m really very sorry, and it’s a pity I disappointed so many people who believed in me. God has a plan for everything.”

Cyborg

“Cyborg” Santos def Jan Finney- TKO Rd2

Strikeforce women’s middleweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos scored her eighth technical knockout in nine fights earlier, disposing of Ohio’s Jan Finney in the second round.

Santos battered the tough Finney, out-striking her 141-23 and ending the bout by delivering a hard knee to Finney’s head and a final flurry of punches to the head that caused referee Kim Winslow to stop the fight at the 2:56 mark of the second round.

“Cyborg” (11-1) had a point deducted in the first round when she struck a lying Finney in the back of the head three times, but it mattered little because she thoroughly dominated.

Cung Le vs. Scott Smith (red gloves)

Cung Le Def. Scott Smith- TKO Rd 2

Cung Le, the former Strikeforce middleweight champion, just scored a second-round TKO over Scott Smith in a rematch of their December fight that Smith won by third-round kockout.

Le’s defining shot was a spinning back kick to Smith’s gut that knocked Smith down. Le pounced, landing punches until the referee stopped it. Le (7-1) dominated the first round with kicks and impressive stand-up combinations.

Josh Thomson (red gloves) vs. Pat Healy

Josh Thompson def. Pat Healy- Rear naked choke Rd 3

Earlier, Josh Thomson (17-3) of San Jose wowed his hometown crowd at HP Pavilion by getting Pat Healy to tap out in a chokehold with 33 seconds left in the final round.

UFC Cuts Keith “The Dean of Mean” Jardine

Posted in Cage Coverage, Local MMA News, MMA News Worldwide, UFC News on June 25th, 2010 by CageCoverage

After five years, 13 fights and four straight losses, Keith Jardine’s tenure with the UFC is over.

UFC President Dana White confirmed to MMA Fighting that the company has cut ties with the Ultimate Fighter season two alumni after his recent majority decision loss to Matt Hamill at last Saturday’s TUF 11 finale.

Prior to his final bout, Jardine was aware his future could be on the line, but he couldn’t hold off Hamill in a closely fought match. Ironically, the bout was competitive enough to earn Jardine a $25,000 “Fight of the Night” bonus, but was not enough to save his job.

The 34-year-old Jardine (15-8-1 overall) finished his UFC run with a 6-7 mark.

Former UFC lightweight champion and WEC veteran Jens Pulver (22-13-1) returns Aug. 14 when he faces one-time Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Diego Garijo (4-1) at “War on the Mainland” in Irvine, Calif.

Pulver, 35, was released from the WEC earlier this month after his fifth consecutive loss in the promotion, a first-round submission to fellow veteran Javier Vasquez at WEC 47. Although he was widely expected to retire, he recently told fans that he’ll soldier on.

Although Pulver had previously worked the broadcast booth as a color analyst for several WEC events, UFC president Dana White recently said the former champion would no longer serve as a commentator.

Additionally, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia is expected to face former UFC contender Paul Buentello on the main card of “War on the Mainland.” Sylvia recently finished former “World’s Strongest Man” competitor Mariusz Pudzianowski at “Moosin: God of Martial Arts,” while Buentello bested Bryan Humes by decision at “Shark Fights 11: Humes vs. Buentello” following his release from the UFC. The event’s co-promoter, Powerhouse World Promotions CEO Brian D. Manna, today confirmed the bouts with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). All bouts are slated for a pay-per-view event, which takes place at the Bren Events Center on the University of California, Irvine campus.

Nick Diaz Suspended for 3 Months for Live Brawl on CBS at Strikeforce: Nashville

Posted in Cage Coverage, Local MMA News, MMA News Worldwide, UFC News on June 23rd, 2010 by CageCoverage

Nick and Jake don't take to kind to Miller's red streak.

Nick Diaz and his younger brother, Nate, Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez and Jason Miller were involved in a post-fight altercation following Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields’ unanimous decision victory over Dan Henderson April 17 at Strikeforce: Nashville.

Miller gained access into the cage while CBS announcer Gus Johnson was interviewing a victorious Jake Shields live. Butting into the middle of the interview that was being broadcasted live, Miller said, “Hey buddy, where’s my rematch?”

Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz, UFC lightweight Nate Diaz, and others in Shields’ camp shoved Miller out of the way and that quickly broke out into an all-out brawl inside the cage. Millerwas forced down on the ground and turtled-up from taking punches and kicks before officials were able to pull them apart.

Strikeforce Brawl

Prompted by so much bad publicity, the Tennessee Athletic Commission targeted the five fighters for a fine and suspension as a result. According to his representative, Nick Diaz has the sent the Tennessee Athletic Commission a “consent order” that will trigger a three-month suspension from all professional competitions.

A three-month suspension will rule Cesar Gracie team member Diaz out of participating in an eight man tournament which has been planned for late August, in a bid to determine a new middleweight champion if, as expected, Jake Shields vacates the title after leaving for the UFC. Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker said at last Wednesday’s Strikeforce: Los Angeles event that he hoped to have Diaz back fighting by the end of the year.
