Spike TV to Telecast UFC 116 Weigh-ins and Prelims Live

Spike TV will telecast live coverage of the weigh-ins for the highly-anticipated “UFC 116 Lesnar-Carwin” fight card on Friday, July 2 at 7:00pm ET/4:00pm PT. The main event features a showdown between the top two heavyweight mixed martial artists in the world, UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and interim heavyweight titlist Shane Carwin.

Spike TV also announces it will telecast live Prelims featuring the light heavyweight clash between “The Ultimate Fighter 2″ alum Seth Petruzelli (14-5) and Ricardo Romero (10-1) on Saturday, July 3 at 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The Petruzelli fight will join the already-announced Brendan Schaub v. Chris Tuchscherer fight.

Seth became known as the Kimbo Slice Killer

Fighting out of Orlando, Florida, the veteran Petruzelli scored his first big victory against mixed martial great Dan Severn in January 2004, winning a three-round decision. A year later he joined the cast of “The Ultimate Fighter 2″ but lost to Brad Imes in the show’s semifinals. Petruzelli gained worldwide attention in October 2008 when he defeated Kimbo Slice with a first round TKO, and riding a four fight winning streak, he returns to the Octagon to take on Ricardo Romero, making his UFC debut.

Fighting out of New Brunswick, NJ, Romero is 10-1 in his mixed martial arts career, including winning his last five straight. A highly-regarded college wrestler for Rutgers University, Romero also scored a notable victory over “The Ultimate Fighter 10″ alum James McSweeney in April 2009. The Petruzelli-Romero fight will replace the Grove-Reljic fight, which will no longer air live on Spike.

Other bouts on the card might air on Spike TV, to be determined by the length of the fights.

UFC 116 Preview and Betting Odds

q.event.title

The wait is over. The undisputed UFC heavyweight championship will be on the line when Brock Lesnar makes his long-awaited return to the Octagon to defend his world title against interim belt holder Shane Carwin in a clash of titans nearly a year in the making.

Carwin has destroyed each of his 12 opponents in less than a round; Lesnar has been just as devastating in his victories over Randy Couture and Frank Mir. When these two heavyweight giants meet in the main event of UFC 116 for the most prestigious title in mixed martial arts, don’t blink.

Also, international superstar Yoshihiro Akiyama, who is unbeaten since 2005, takes on Chris “The Crippler” Leben in what promises to be an action-packed middleweight bout.  UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin, Saturday, July 3rd, live on pay-per-view from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Did Fedor Underestimate the Differences Between the Ring and a Cage

Posted in Cage Coverage, Local MMA News, MMA News Worldwide, Videos, Writer Thoughts on June 29th, 2010 by CageCoverage

Fabricio Werdum vs. Fedor Emelianenko (red gloves)

World Extreme Fighter has an interesting view of why and how Fedor had to tap-out for the first time in nearly 10 years.

Could it have been that the cage prevented Fedor from escaping Werdum’s BJJ?

Fedor threw a wild right hook that either barely clipped Werdum’s chin, or made him lose his balance falling backwards to avoid it. (26 seconds into the fight).  Werdum immediately starts butt-scooting and appears to have all his faculties.

What happens next is incredibly important and I can’t believe people are not noticing it.  Fedor has solid sub defense, when Werdum initially goes for the armbar, he spins out of it, shrugging it off easily and goes back to work with his punches.

In his excitement (37 seconds into the fight) Fedor spins to his right trying to avoid Werdum’s extremely active sub attempts and as Werdum does a forward roll into guard, Fedor gets pressed against the cage, stopping his momentum and giving Werdum the moment he needed to throw his left leg around Fedor’s head. Werdum crosses his feet going for a brief armbar but then locks in the triangle.  From that point on, it was only a matter of time until Fedor tapped or went unconscious.

It was Fedor’s inexperience in a cage, coupled with his over aggression on the ground against the two-time ADCC submission wrestling champion that was his downfall.  I had asked Fedor if he felt he had successfully adapted to the cage in the conference call last week and this was his answer.

“I trained in a cage in Russia and I feel like I’ve adapted.  I don’t really see any major differences whether I’m fighting in the cage or in a ring.  I feel comfortable in there”, Fedor said.

Fedor may have underestimated the differences between the ring and a cage.  I don’t think Werdum latches on that triangle in a ring.  Fedor would have kept spinning around Werdum from top position or the ref would have stepped in and moved them to the center of the ring.

MMA fighter Michael Kirkham Dies After Match

Posted in Cage Coverage, Local MMA News, MMA News Worldwide, Videos on June 29th, 2010 by CageCoverage

From his Meetup.com page:

Bio

im a fighter that has always looked up to bruce lee ihave read many books on the man and have always wanted to train i jkd but have never had the oppertunity

Thirty-year-old Michael Kirkham has died after suffering several head blows during a professional Mixed Martial Arts fight. The lightweight brawler known as “Tree” because of his imposing 6-foot-9 presence, fought Saturday on a card in Aiken, South Carolina. Other MMA fighters, including Kirkham’s opponent, stress theirs is no more dangerous than any other sport.

It was supposed to be the beginning of his professional career. Instead, the Mixed Martial Arts industry is mourning the loss of Michael Kirkham.

Thirty-year-old Kirkham was fighting in Saturday’s “Confrontation at the Convocation Center” promoted by Dash Entertainment and King MMA. The event was regulated by the South Carolina Athletic Commission.

During the first round, he sustained several blows to the head. Kirkham lost and never regain consciousness. He was transported to Aiken Regional Medical Center, where he died Monday morning from his injuries.

Only one other person has died as the result of a professional MMA match.

The first known death in a regulated event occurred with Sam Vasquez on November 30, 2007. Vasquez was in a coma for 42 days after the fight in October before eventually passing away.

Kirkham had competed in several amateur fights, but this was his first professional match.

Mark Greubel owns Greubel’s Mixed Martial Arts in Augusta and trains fighters of all skill levels. He saw the fight that ended Kirkham’s life, and says the blows came during a routine MMA move called “the mount.”

Carlos Iravuro was the other fighter in the ring that night. He says he is still upset over what happened to his opponent.

“I’m in there to compete for a sport,” he says. “I’m not there to do any permanent damage to anybody. I was concerned. Very concerned.”

Greubel is raising money to help Kirkham’s family. He asks that anyone interested contact him at his studio.
